Okemo Mountain School - Academics
Okemo Mountain School now operates as a full year private school approved by the State of Vermont. Our school year runs from the day after Labor Day through the first week in June. Students enjoy small class sizes and the opportunity for much one-on-one contact with teachers. They follow a rigorous curriculum in all major subjects, with AP and honors classes available. They have the opportunity to compete in sports such as mountain biking, cross country running, baseball, golf, and soccer during the fall and spring. During the winter season, full year students are joined by winter term students for training in their on-snow discipline. Full year students stay with their full year teachers for each of their subjects throughout the winter term, but may be joined by one or two Winter Term students.
Okemo Mountain School’s Winter Term program begins the first week of November and continues through the end of March. The academics for the Winter Term students are conducted as an instruction based tutorial program. Every student has what is referred to as a “home school”, the school that the student attends when not at Okemo Mountain School. If accepted, the Okemo Mountain School Academic Coordinator will contact your guidance counselor to discuss the curriculum and develop individual academic plans in each subject area to be followed during your time at Okemo Mountain School. It is mandatory that your home school support your participation in our program. Parents must contact the respective home school administration to be sure that they understand the program and will allow participation. This must be approved in writing and done before the application procedure begins. We have included an information sheet that you can share with your home school describing in more detail what will be asked of them. If you run into problems with your home school’s support, don’t hesitate to contact the Head of School or the Academic Coordinator to help explain the Okemo Mountain School program to them more clearly and answer any specific questions that they may have. When the academic year begins, it is the role of the Okemo Mountain School to administer the curriculum, as specified by the home school.
The Target Term Program gives OMS applicants another option for accessing top notch training and academics. There are 3 enrollment options for a Target Term student with each program lasting 7 weeks. Students enrolled in a Target Term are given scheduled time with a tutor in each of their academic subjects. The Target Term program is effective for younger student athletes and/or those student athletes who are not ready for the five month commitment of the Winter Term Program.
